Matariki & Mātauranga - a collaborative model for long-term environmental resilience

Dion.JPG

Dion Pou, Rivercare Group Te Wai o Pareira trustee, restoration ecologist and a specialist in aligning taiao kaupapa, including mainstream kaupapa, within a Maori worldview.  Dion's passion is to bring together these complementary disciplines in a way that offers fresh insight and solutions to our current environmental challenges.  Understanding this perspective can help us broaden our thinking and better understand our place in working collaboratively - with each other and with nature.

Pixie Stream Clean up

On the 9th of June we joined Earth Action Trust for a clean up of Pixie Stream in Te Atatū Peninsula. Nearly 400kgs total rubbish was removed; 84kg landfill waste, 53kg of recyclables and 250kg of illegal dumping, including a whole bath tub!

Thank you to all the wonderful volunteers who got stuck in.

Thank you to Earth Action Trust for another successful event, Te Atatū Roosters for the kai and your support, Royce Sports Promo for the incredible photos, Edmonton Scouting Group for getting your waders on and getting right into the stream! And Second Nature Gardens Limited for providing a truck to cart away all the rubbish.

Urban flooding - building flooding resilience

MB 2.jpeg

Dr Matthew Bradbury is an Associate Professor at the School of Architecture, UNITEC.  Matthew's recent research has been into adapting urban development to the challenges of climate change.  Matthew has published a book "Water City, practical strategies for Climate Change".  Matthew is going to share the key learnings of his research with us and this knowledge could help us to engage with Auckland Council.  Mayor Brown has said he wants Council to work with property owners to develop solutions.  We need to know what is possible and what the options are.
